If pigeons keep returning to a warehouse roof, the honest answer is that the building is still offering them somewhere to sit. Post and wire, spikes or netting?

Post and wire suits a narrow ledge where the birds land rather than nest, and it is close to invisible from the ground, which is why it tends to be the choice on a visible parapet. Spike systems suit narrow ledges under sustained pressure and are simple to install, but they do nothing on a wide deck where a bird can simply land beyond them.

Netting is the only honest answer where a whole void has to be closed, for example under a plant deck or across a purlin run. It is the most visually intrusive option and the most demanding to install correctly, because a net with one badly tensioned corner is a bird trap rather than a proofing system. Get the mesh size right for the target species, and design a zipped access panel wherever a maintenance team needs to get in.

The point people miss about netting

A net is a permanent structure bolted to your building. It needs the same thinking as any other roof fixture: fixing points that suit the substrate, tension that holds through wind loading, and a documented inspection interval. A net nobody has looked at for four years is a liability, not a control measure.

What does pigeon fouling actually cost a commercial operator?

The direct cost is cleaning and the indirect cost is audit score, and on a food site the second one is far more expensive. Pigeon fouling in or near a production area, a raw material intake or an external storage yard is a straightforward pest activity finding, and an auditor will want to see the evidence trail: what was found, when, what was done, and what stopped it recurring.

The safety exposure is real too. Dried fouling on a walkway or a plant deck is a slip hazard, and the Health and Safety Executive expects a site to have assessed that alongside any biological risk from disturbed droppings during clearance.   • Close the waste loop. Lidded bins, no standing spillage in the yard, compactor doors shut between uses.

Where does the law limit what you can do?

All wild birds, feral pigeons included, are protected under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981. Proofing and exclusion are unrestricted in the sense that you can close a building to birds at any time, but you cannot deliberately obstruct or destroy a nest in use, and that changes the sequence of work on a live site.

In practice it means a survey has to establish whether nests are active before a net goes up, and it means the honest answer on a heavily nested plant deck is sometimes that proofing waits. Will spikes on their own stop pigeons on a warehouse roof?

Only on narrow ledges. Spike systems work by removing a landing surface that is barely wider than the bird, so on a parapet lip or a narrow duct run they are effective. On a wide plant deck a pigeon simply lands past them, which is why spikes fitted to a large flat area tend to look like a solution for one season and then fail. Match the product to the feature.

Do we have to clear the fouling before proofing goes up?

On any food, retail or occupied commercial site, yes, and it should be recorded. Clearance gives you a clean substrate for fixings, removes the slip and biological hazard, and sets a baseline so any new fouling after install is obviously new.
