Electronic fly killers, often called EFKs, are a fixture in food premises across the country. They hang in kitchens, food factories, warehouses and back-of-house areas, drawing flying insects in with ultraviolet light. Most of the units in service today use fluorescent UV tubes that contain a small amount of mercury. That is the part that is changing, and the change has a date attached.
What exactly is changing in 2027?
Under the Restriction of Hazardous Substances rules, known as RoHS, mercury is being phased out of fluorescent lighting. Fly-killer UV tubes have been covered by a specific exemption that allowed them to keep using mercury. That exemption is set to expire on 24 February 2027. After that point, the mercury fluorescent UV tubes that most existing EFK units rely on are no longer compliant to place on the market.

Why does this matter for food premises specifically?
Insect control is a core part of food safety, and fly units are one of the most visible pieces of pest control equipment an auditor sees. BRC Global Standards Food Safety v9 and EHO inspections both expect flying-insect control to be in place, working, and maintained. When the technology behind that control is subject to a regulatory phase-out, it becomes a compliance question, not just a maintenance one.

What are the advantages of LED fly killers?
The move is being forced by regulation, but the replacement technology is genuinely better in service, which makes the transition easier to justify on its own merits.
- No mercury. LED units contain no mercury, so they sidestep the RoHS issue entirely and remove a hazardous material from your food environment.
- Longer tube life. LED lamps typically run far longer than fluorescent UV tubes, which need replacing roughly every six months to stay effective. Fewer changes means lower maintenance cost and less chance of a unit running on a degraded tube.
- Lower energy use. LED units draw significantly less power than the fluorescent equivalents, which adds up across an estate of always-on equipment.
- Consistent attraction. A fluorescent UV tube loses output gradually, so a unit can look like it is working while pulling in fewer insects. LED output holds up better over its life.
Taken together, those advantages mean the switch usually pays for itself over the life of the units, before the compliance benefit is even counted. Lower energy draw, far fewer tube changes, and steadier insect capture add up quickly across an estate of equipment that runs around the clock. How should a commercial site plan the transition?
There is no need to rip and replace everything at once. A measured plan protects both your budget and your audit position.
- Survey your existing units. Know how many EFKs you have, where they are, their age, and which still use mercury fluorescent tubes.
- Prioritise high-risk areas. Food preparation, open product and high-care zones come first, because that is where an interruption to fly control matters most.
- Phase replacement with your service schedule. Swap to LED at the natural point in your maintenance cycle rather than running a separate, costly programme.
- Keep the placement right. A new unit in the wrong position is no better than an old one. Correct siting, away from doors and competing light, is what makes the technology work.
- Update your documentation. Record the change, the new equipment, and the service intervals so the audit pack reflects what is actually on the wall.
It is worth stressing that the deadline is an opportunity, not just an obligation. Many sites are running older units that have drifted below their best, with tubes overdue for replacement and ultraviolet output quietly falling. Treating the 2027 change as the prompt to review your whole fly-control estate, correcting siting, refreshing maintenance schedules and standardising on LED, usually improves catch rates and lowers running costs at the same time.
